How to remotely enable Remote Desktop (RDP) in Windows XP/Vista/7/2008

Remote Desktop or RDP service is a free useful tool to remotely log on to remote computer and gain full access and privileges as if user is in front of local console. Remote Desktop is also known as Terminal Services. It’s useful if the server, or PC is located miles away in remote location, and frequent trip to the site to troubleshoot, configure or manage the system is not a viable option.

However, if an off-site server needs to be access via Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client immediately, yet the Remote Desktop is not enabled on the server, then it will be a headache. Luckily it’s possible to remotely enable and turn of the Remote Desktop service on a remote PC or server by remotely editing its registry.

To remotely enable RDP on another computer, follow these steps:

  • Login to the workstation with administrator credentials.
  • Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  • Click on File menu.
  • Select the Connect Network Registry in the pull down menu.

  • A “Select Computer” dialog search box is opened. Type the host name of the remote computer in the text box, or browse Active Directory to locate the remote server, or click on “Advanced” button to search for the remote computer.

  • Click OK after the remote computer is selected. A node for the remote computer network registry will be displayed in the Registry Editor with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) and HKEY_USERS (HKU) hives.

  • Navigate to the following registry key for the remote computer:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

  • In the right pane, locate a REG_DWORD value named fDenyTSConnection. Double-click onfDenyTSConnection and change the value data from 1 (Remote Desktop disabled) to 0 (Remote Desktop enabled).

  • Reboot the remote machine by issuing the following command in Command Prompt:

shutdown -m \\Musheer-Laptop –r

  • Replace ‘Musheer-Laptop’ with the actual computer name of the remote host.

Remote Desktop for the remote computer has been enabled.

There are also plenty of freeware utility that allows user to remotely enable Remote Desktop without modifying registry, like IntelliAdmin, Acroni, etc…

Difference between sleep mode and hibernate

Windows 7 provides several options for conserving power when you are not using your PC. These options include Sleep and Hibernate. Both are very useful if you are using a laptop. And both mode will help us to maintain battery life. but what is the difference between them, or which on is better to use? Here’s we are going to learn about this moth mode.

Sleep Mode

Sleep is a power-saving state that allows a computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within several seconds) when you want to start working again. And this mode is a power-saving state that is similar to pausing a DVD movie. All actions on the computer are stopped and any open documents and applications are put in memory. You can quickly resume normal, full-power operation within a few seconds. Sleep mode is basically the same thing as “Standby” mode. when the computer will go to sleep mode, the opened files and applications opened data will stored in RAM. this is why it is waking up quickly. but while in sleep mode if we lost the batter power all data and opened application will be lost. and computer will run as from the 1st start.

The Sleep mode is useful if you want to stop working for a short period of time. The computer doesn’t use much power in Sleep mode.

Hibernate

The Hibernate mode saves your open documents and running applications to your hard disk and shuts down the computer, which means once your computer is in Hibernate mode, it uses zero power. So hibernation uses the least amount of power. Once the computer is powered back on, it will resume everything where you let off. Waking up from Hibernate mode will take time to than from sleep mode. but very few time deference only.

Remember before you enable Hibernate, you should have free space in your hard disk which is equivalent to your system RAM size. for example if you have 4 GB RAM, then your must have 4 GB free space in your hard disk.

Use this mode if you won’t be using the laptop for an extended period of time, and you don’t want to close your documents.

How to fix corrupt windows user profile

Every user in the Windows OS has a user folder associated with the account name which  stores computer settings and data.A common problem with Windows machines is a corrupt user profile. So windows fails to recognize the user profile and folder that is linked to the user account. This can be caused by a hard drive error, joining/leaving a domain, file system issues and a change of username. What will happen in this case is that the next time the user logs-on, a fresh, empty profile will be created, named 'user.domain' or 'user.computer' instead of just 'user' -and from that point on, the new profile will be used instead of the correct one.

Before we start learning how we fix any corrupt account make sure you have a an account which either is admin or is  admin privileged.

All the Windows User Profiles are located under C:\Users\UserName which contains all our settings. Now go to your account and unhide hidden folders and uncheck Hide Protected operating system files. You would see three files NTUSER.DAT, NTUSER.dat.log and ntuser.ini which you will need to be careful about.

  • Login with your admin account and  create new account.
  • Now identify which user profile is corrupted and  go to that folder which will be like C:\Users\UserName
  • Unhide Folders / Files and display system files
  • Copy everything from this folder  except three files NTUSER.DAT, NTUSER.dat.log and ntuser.ini
  • Go to new account folder located under C:\users and paste all the files you copied in above step.
  • Logoff and login to the new account to confirm.
  • Delete the old account.

This should fix your problems. Remember many a times because of some bug you might see Windows giving you a brand new profile but if you logoff and try logging in again you would see the issues getting fixed.

There is another alternative called as Reprofiler a software which can also help you in fix these issues by remapping users to their profiles, fixing registry settings and permissions which is required to fix any corrupt windows account.

image

It displays all the user accounts above and all the windows users folder below. Now to fix it or map to any other account you can just select first a user name above and a folder below and then hit Assign. This will make sure it copies and assigns proper settings. You can also remove / detach folders which is useful when it comes to erase the data.

Enable/Disable Hibernation in Windows Vista

What is the difference between Vista's sleep and hibernate?   Sleep awakens quicker than hibernate.  In the event of complete power loss, sleep stores the information in RAM, thus loss of power means loss of unsaved data.  Hibernate on the other hand, saves the contents of memory to a file called hiberfil.sys, thus you would not lose unsaved data.

The space it takes up depends on your RAM. If you have 1 GB of RAM, Hibernation uses up to 1 GB of hard drive space. If you don't use the Hibernation feature Windows Vista offers, it's taking up a lot of unnecessary hard drive space.

Enable Hibernation in Vista

To enable hibernation, click on your Start menu, and type powercfg.exe /hibernate on in your search box. Then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter, which will run the command line you typed in as an administrator.

Disable Hibernation in Vista

To disable hibernation, click on your Start menu, and type powercfg.exe /hibernate off in your search box. Then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter, which will run the command line you typed in as an administrator.

Speed Up Your Internet Bandwidth

Well, Many of you already know this tweak, but just want to recall it again.A nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here’s how to get it back:

Click Start–>Run–>type “gpedit.msc”

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy–>Computer Configuration–>Administrative Templates–>Network–>QOS Packet Scheduler–>Limit Reservable Bandwidth

image

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab :

“By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.

This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Update Group Policy

Click Start–>Run–>type “cmd” to open command prompt.

type gpupdate /force

Or restart your computer for GP update.

In Windows XP, open the command prompt of the operating system by entering ‘cmd.exe’ through ‘Start | Run’, and click ‘OK’. In Windows Vista, you can enter the commands directly in the search field of the start menu.

In the command prompt, type ‘Systeminfo.exe’ and confirm with [Enter]. The program lists the operating system configuration including the service packs. A description of the possible parameters is available with the command ‘Systeminfo.exe /?’. The output of the program can be copied to a text file and you can give it any name of your choice. This file contains all important information needed during a support query, but apart from the user name, no other personal data is included.

For example, to store the information in a file called ‘Systeminfo.txt’, use the command ‘systeminfo> c:\systeminfo.txt’ and confirm with [Enter]. If the file does not exist, Windows creates it automatically. Otherwise, the operating system overwrites it without prompting.
